The First School...

First SchoolIn 1871, the first school in the Pomona Valley offered classes in both English and Spanish in one room of the Alvarado adobe.  The school, created by settlers, formed what they called the Palomares District.

But the demand for education was so great that the very same year a small schoolhouse was constructed.  By 1875 more than 70 students were enrolled.

Central School
In 1876, Spadra, as the town was known then, built Central School at the corner of Park and Holt avenues.

In 1888, when the City of Pomona was incorporated, the Palomares District became the Pomona District, offering classes through the ninth grade to 648 students.

A New Unified District...

Through the years Pomona District grew and changed, adding a high school in 1889, awarding its first diplomas in 1893.

In 1916 a junior college curriculum was added to the Pomona High School District, which remained until the formation of the Mount San Antonio Junior College District in 1946.

In 1954, the Pomona Unified School District was formed, with boundaries established by the state, uniting the Pomona Elementary School District, Pomona High School District, and Spadra Elementary School District.
