Flu Precautions

September, 2009

As we begin the 2009-10 school year, we are continuing our efforts to prevent and limit the spread of H1N1 flu at our schools.  The following Los Angeles Department of Public Health recommendations are in place in PUSD:

• Stay home when sick:  As always, we monitor illness at all our schools each day.  Our intention is to make sure students and staff with flu-like symptoms stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medication.

• Wash hands frequently: Students and staff should wash their hands frequently.  Hand sanitizer is available in all classrooms for use when soap and water are not available.

• Cover your coughs and sneezes:  Students and staff and school visitors should cover coughs and sneezes, preferably with a tissue or at least in their sleeve.  Coughing and sneezing into hands will spread illness quickly and easily.

• Separate ill students and staff from others:  Students and staff who have flu-like symptoms will be separated from others in a safe environment until they can be sent home.

Because it is so important for those who are sick to stay home, we are recommending that parents begin planning child care alternatives now that can be used in case their children become ill.

At present, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is planning for distribution of both the seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccine.  Flu Clinic information will be provided to parents as soon as it is available.
