Welcome to second grade!  Here's what we will be studying and exploring in the upcoming weeks:

  We are beginning our reading theme Silly Stories.  We will review parts of a story, decoding skills, and vocabulary.  In addition,  we will start guided reading groups after getting to know the children.  Please help support us by reading with your child every night, along with reviewing our weekly reading story.  After completing each story there will be a comprehension and vocabulary test.

    To begin the year we will focus on writing organization.  The children will learn how to write a topic sentence, three main details, and a conclusion sentence.  In grammar we will review complete and incomplete sentences and nouns. 

  We are working on place value, reviewing ones and tens.   After, we will move onto basic addition and subtraction strategies.  Begin practicing and memorizing basic addition and subtraction facts for our timed math test!  The goal is for each child to complete 100 problems with 97% accuracy in five minutes.  Please help your child at home with flash cards!

This month we are focusing on science and learning about plant and animal life cycles.  We will have lots of fun learning about how plants and animals grow and change.
