Community Connections
The Leadership and Resiliency Program (LRP), a part of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students department, is a school and community based program for high school students (ages 14 to 17) that works to enhance youths' internal strengths and resiliency, while preventing involvement in substance use and violence.  LRP is a year-round comprehensive program aimed at youth who have a combination of behavioral issues manifested in absenteeism, high levels of disciplinary actions, low grades, substance use, and/or violence.  These alternative activities, offered after school, on weekends, and during the summer, focus on community service, service learning, altruism, social skills improvement, and conflict resolution.

Positive Activities

Positive Youth Development Activities, a part of the safe Schools/Healthy Students department, includes a wide range of prevention resources to help PUSD youth build resilience and to develop leadership and resiliency skills.  Staff work with local youth service agencies and community based organizations to help sponsor youth participation in recreational and other youth-development programs.

Support Groups
Student Support Groups, a part of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students department, help move students from risk to resiliency.  The Support Groups are curriculum-based gatherings led by trained school staff members.  Student Support groups are not designed to take the place of therapy, but rather to give students a place where they can feel cared for and connected to others experiencing similar problems.  Several different groups are designed to help students with different areas of concern.  Student Support Group topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Insight-- Students experiencing problems related to their use of alcohol or other drugs

  • Concerned Persons-Students affected by the alcohol or other drug use of a parent or someone in a caretaker role

  • Sharing-A personal growth group that deal with various problem

  • Grief and Loss-Students dealing with loss either through death, trauma, moving, or transition

  • Prisoners of the Heart-Students with a parent or loved one who is incarcerated

  • Families in Transition-Students who have families going through hard time
