Social-Emotional Support
Student Assistance Program
The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is made up of a select team of staff who specialize in helping students deal with problems that interfere with their learning. This includes helping students deal with peer conflicts, trauma, substance abuse, family distress, or any number of issues that threaten our students' success. The SAP process will also be used for the initial identification and assessment of students in need of mental health services. Mental Health services are provided at two levels: 1) early preventative services to reduce the risk of onset or delay the onset of emotional and behavioral problems and 2) to identify those children who may require an appropriate referral, treatment, and follow-up services. Services may include individual, family, or group counseling.
Support Groups
Student Support Groups help move students from risk to resiliency. The support groups are curriculum-based gatherings led by trained school staff members. Student support groups are not designed to take the place of therapy, but rather to give students a place where they can feel cared for and connect to others experiencing similar problems. Several different groups are designed to help students with different areas of concern.
Student Support Group topics include, but are not limited to the following:
- Insight-Students experiencing problems related to their use of alcohol or other drugs
- Concerned Persons -Students affected by the alcohol or other drug use of a parent or someone in a caretaker role
- Sharing-A personal growth group that deals with various problems
- Grief and Loss- Students dealing with loss either through death, trauma, moving, or transition
- Prisoners of the Heart- Students with a parent or loved one who is incarcerated
- Families in Transition- Students who have families going through hard times
