Prepare preschool children for Kindergarten by introducing socialization, literacy, numeric exploration, phonological awareness, social studies introductions, appropriate investigation into the world of science that surrounds us, ensure children have physicals and immunizations, provide early intervention if necessary, and assist parents to transition their child successfully into Kindergarten.
Center-based part day and full day preschool is available to children ages three and four, with four year olds having priority. The program is designed to prepare our students for a 21st century global economy and community that all begins in preschool. The Head Start experience provides a preschool classroom full of engaging and developmentally appropriate educational opportunities that will expose your child to SMARTboard technology, music, dramatic play, literacy, numbers, socialization with other children as well as a very thoroughly embedded CSEFEL curriculum that teaches each child to be a thoughtful, respectful member of the classroom, computers, outdoor play, and so much more. The program uses the Houghton-Mifflin curriculum which has ELD strategies imbedded within the program. State of the art technology is integrated to foster engagement and enthusiasm for learning.
Services for the child and family include education, health, mental health, nutrition, social services, referrals, screenings and assessments, and opportunities for parent involvement and trainings.
Eligibility is based on the age of the child, family income, family size, as well as other criteria that may prioritize a child for eligibility. The program welcomes foster children, children with disabilities (if this is the appropriate placement), and families in transitional living situations.
Head Start classrooms are throughout the Pomona Unified School District.
