State Preschool
Goals
Provide educational services to children in a center-based program.
Provide an efficient and effective child care and development system, as determined by community needs, offering a full range of educational services in a safe, healthful and nurturing environment.
Provide services for children to be personally & socially competent, be effective learners, and show physical and motor competence.
Provide support to families to support their children's learning and development.
Services
State Preschool sites provide free part-day preschool program for eligible low-income families. Students are provided with Houghton Mifflin Pre-K Curriculum.
Each site, all of which are licensed by the Department of Community Care Licensing Division, does the following:
- Serves nutritional snacks.
- Provides families with community resources.
- Provides training and workshops for staff and parents.
- Assesses children twice a year using the Desired Results Developmental Profile PS -2010.
- Encourages parent participation in the classroom, at parent meetings and at Parent Advisory Committee meetings.
Active Learning Opportunities
Children learn by doing and having five key ingredients.
- Materials available for children to explore.
- Toys and materials for children to handle, work and play with.
- Choices - Children are given opportunities to have control to select materials and to set their own goals
- Language for the children to communicate - verbally and non verbally.
- Support from adults to encourage the children's efforts by helping extend and build upon children's knowledge and skills, joining them at play, and helping them solve problems.
