FOR YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY

The security and safety of our students is our primary concern and in order to make our campus more secure and monitor who enters, we are instituting the following new procedures.

  1. Effective Monday, May 2, 2011, we will have a campus supervisor posted at the main entrance to our school issuing Visitor’s Passes between 7:30 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. and asking parents to sign the Visitor Log before coming onto our campus. All adults coming onto our campus MUST have a Visitor’s Pass and sign the log.
  2. Our students in grades 1-3 will be lining up in the quad area by the new mural, across from the upper grade students and across from the fence.  Please be sure that parents do not accompany your child into the quad area. We ask that parents have Visitor’s Passes and stay outside of the quad area.
  3. Also, please do not block teachers’ and their classes as they walk to their rooms (be sure that strollers and toddlers are kept out of the way as classes proceed through the hallways).
  4. The south gate leading directly to the preschool classrooms will be locked at 7:30a.m., and remain locked until 3:00 pm. Therefore, we are asking that all parents enter the office and get a visitor pass before walking your child to their classroom.  It is extremely important that we know who is on our campus at all times. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you.
  5. Kindergarten students will continue to meet their teachers at the Kindergarten classrooms by the blue benches, but please be sure you have a Visitor’s Pass daily.

As we near the end of the school year, we want to let you know it has been a pleasure and honor to serve you and your child (ren).

Please contact us if you have any questions,

Respectfully,

Rosa Mendieta, Principal

Respetuosamente,

Rosa Mendieta, Directora

 What is AR?

AR stands for Accelerated Reader.  Accelerated Reader is a program that schools across the country use to monitor the reading progress of their students.  The students read a book.  After reading, they log into their AR account and take a short quiz about the book they read.  Then, they are given a score and a set of points.  Many schools use these AR points to motivate students to read more.  The standard goal for all kids is to pass each test with 85% accuracy or above.

Dear Parents,

Starting Monday, April 18, we will begin a new AR motivational system to encourage the students to read more.  This system is called “Readers Ahoy!” and will keep track of all the AR points they earn from April 18 until the end of the school year.  “Readers Ahoy!”  has 3 levels for the children to reach and every time they reach a level, they will be rewarded with prizes.  This is how they can reach the levels and these are the prizes they can earn:

Grades 1-2

Grades 3-4

Grades 5-6

Prizes

Level 1

2.5 points

5 points

10 points

certificate of accomplishment,   prize, raffle for a boardgame

Level 2

5 points

10 points

20 points

certificate of accomplishment,   prize, raffle for a backpack filled with cool supplies

Level 3

10 points

15 points

30 points

certificate of accomplishment, ice cream, pizza party, raffle for an ipod

The purpose for this system is to motivate the children to read more and more.  The more they read, the better they get at reading, and the better they get at reading, the easier it is for them to achieve academic excellence.  Please encourage your child to read everyday.  Have them borrow and read books from the library (the school library or any library) and have them take AR quizzes.  They can take an AR quiz everyday if they want.  With your help and encouragement, your child will be able to easily accomplish all of these levels and become the best student he/she can be.

A “Readers Ahoy!” bulletin board will be posted in the cafeteria so that all students can see their progress.  Please come by and take a look.

Thank you for your support of “Readers Ahoy!”

Sincerely,

Rosa Mendieta

Barfield Elementary School Principal

14 de abril 2011

Estimados Padres,

Vengan a verlo!

 Sinceramente,

Rosa Mendieta

Directora de la Escuela Barfield

PARENTS!  Did you know that you could set up email alerts so that every time your child takes an AR quiz, you will be notified of the book and the score.  It’s so easy to set up and it keeps you involved so that you can push your child to be the best reader he/she can be.  Here’s how you do it:

 Step 1:

Log on to https://hosted250.renlearn.com/268164/HomeConnect/Login.aspx

Step 2:

enter your child’s user name and password

User name is your child’s 1st name initial, full last name, and lunch number

example:  jsmith2095166

Password is 2 digit month, 2 digit day, 2 digit year

example:  061004 (for June 10, 2004)

Step 3:

In the upper right hand corner click Email Setup

Step 4:

Fill in the spaces with your first name and email address and follow the directions from there.

Now, every time your child takes a quiz, you will now exactly when and how they did.  This helps you to easily manage your child’s reading efforts and track his/her accomplishments.  HAVE FUN!

PADRES!

Primer Paso:  Vaya a:  https://hosted250.renlearn.com/268164/HomeConnect/Login.aspx

Diviertanse!

Pomona Unified's Barfield Elementary celebrates reading

By Monica Rodriguez on March 5, 2010 8:25 PM

All week Pomona schools marked the birthday of children's book author Theodor Geisel with activities that included assemblies and visits from the Cat in the Hat. Students at Barfield Elementary marked the start of activities with the first "Chalk Festival and Read Across America Kickoff" drawing about 100 children and parents to campus last Sunday (Feb. 28). "We got such a positive response, and it was a neat way to kick off Read Across America" activities, said Barfield Principal Rosa Mendieta.  Geisel, better known to readers as Dr. Seuss, was born March 2, 1904. His birth date is now celebrated as Read Across America day - a day to celebrate the joy and importance of reading. Barfield students created chalk art pieces on the school grounds and used their artistic abilities to give the campus a festive look for the start of the week of celebrations, Mendieta said. As part of the Chalk Festival the 60 member-strong Barfield Dance Team, under the direction Lisa Cole, performed for parents and fellow students.  In addition to celebrating with visual and performing arts families took time to spend time reading together and doing so at school, Mendieta said. The day had a dual purpose to instill in children an interest in reading and to let them and families know "that school is a fun place," Mendieta said.  School is a place where learning takes place as well as as a place where families can come together and create bonds around enjoyable activities, she said.

THIS IS A SEPARATE ARTICLE: National Youth Art Month Spotlight…Barfield Elementary

Barfield Elementary students and staff embrace the power of the arts!  Their popular Barfield Dance Team, directed by school supervisor Ms. Lisa Cole, has performed numerous times throughout the City. A PUSD young alumna, Andrew Colunga, is painting a "college bound" themed mural in their courtyard.  And, most recently, the Barfield community had a widely successful Chalk Fest as their Read Across America Kick-off.

Barfield's principal, Rosa Mendieta, attended the City of Pomona's Third Annual Chalk Art Festival last November and immediately started to organize Barfield's first Chalk Fest event.  Pomona High School art teachers Sadie Phillips and Mark Gilstrap enlisted their art students who had participated in the City event, to help with Barfield's.  With over 100 people in attendance, participating student artists and their families created chalk art based on Dr. Seuss's books and characters.  Numerous community businesses and organizations donated gift cards for winning artists, and, of course, the Barfield Dance Team performed! Principal Mendieta is looking forward to their second annual Chalk Fest next year," The arts give students the opportunity to be creative and connect to their learning."  Check out Barfield's homepage for more information about their community programs!
