Hello PHS,

As you know, here at PHS, we count with a great group of parent volunteers. They had made a great effort this year in benefit of this school and its students. During the year they have made handcrafts, and on Monday, April 30th, we want to have an Open House here at the Parent Center, room 7. If you have time, please make a stop at the Parent Center from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. and greet the parents. Also, we would like to invite you to the "Cinco de Mayo Festival" that will take place at the downtown Pomona on Saturday, May 5th. Parent Center of Pomona High will have a booth selling handcrafts. The money of the sale will be used to buy laptop for Perfect Attendance raffle and if possible for other prizes for students. If you can, please come to the Parent Center next  Monday and wish us good luck with this selling.

Also, if you have handcrafts materials you don't use, please consider to donate them to the parent center. Volunteers can create great things that we can sell that day.

Thanks, and if you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Medical Acedemy Project Night: 3/2012
Hello PHS Community,
The Medical Academy Project Night was a tremendous success with over 130 in attendance. Students shared projects (working heart and liver models) in an exhibit, power point presentations, reflection and learning share outs, and two awesome student made movies…impressive! Most importantly, students had the opportunity to share with their parents what they’ve learned shadowing doctors at hospitals, exploring the medical field on field trips, researching the medical field with their assigned medical academy teacher and taking EMT and health occupations classes.

On the behalf of the administrative team, I’d like to extend a special thanks to the parent center volunteers for their incredible support last night and all of the medical academy staff who continues to go over and beyond to support our students who are interested in the medical field; an additional thanks to ASB!!!!

Great job everyone! Enjoy your well deserved break!

Best,

History Day LA 2012

I just wanted to share some great news.  This past Saturday was the annual History Day competition.  It is a county competition where students from grades 4 – 12 conduct historical research and develop projects in various categories such as performances and exhibits.  This year’s theme was Revolution, Reaction, and Reform.  From Pomona Unified three schools participated – Fremont, Ganesha, and Pomona.

As the competition progressed, more and more of Pomona’s students made it to the finals.  In the end 7 of our 11 teams made it as finalists, and 3 made it to state…AGAIN!  J  The student’s names are listed in the attachment along with a team photo.  Please congratulate them when you see them.  They worked very hard on these projects and showed great sportsmanship, especially when Ganesha won for Group Exhibit.  That was an exciting moment for everyone because Ganesha had never competed before and they were very surprised and are as excited about state as our team is.

State competition is April 27-29 in Riverside at the Convention Center.  We have a busload of students who will be going to see the competition on the 28th, if any of you are interested in seeing what amazing work our students do please think about going and if you are available to chaperone please let me know.  It would be Saturday the 28th of April from 8am – 6pm (approximately).

Superior performances. (2/2012)

This past Saturday the PHS Orchestra and 5 students from Band participated in the District Solo-Ensemble Festival. At this event, soloists or small groups of students play one song for a judge and are rated on how well they play (a standard rubric is used). Performances are rated Superior (the highest), Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor. Those who receive a superior rating qualify to attend the Regional Solo-Ensemble Festival.

Students who earned a Superior are:
The Orchestra—playing as a group
Members are David Barrera, Monika Raygoza, Jose Lopez, Carolina Larios, Juana Arredondo,
Anthony Arce-Guillen, Manuel Hernandez, Audrey Ocampo, Gissell Mojica, Clayton Swartz,
Isaac Loaiza, and Adriana Gonzalez
Andrew Nava—Alto Sax solo
Diana Mendoza—Flute solo
Diana actually received an even higher form of the Superior Rating called “Command Performance!”

Students who earned an Excellent are:
David Osorio-Vera—Tuba solo
Abraham Loaiza—Alto Sax solo
Zakkiyya West—Bari Sax solo

The soloists all prepared their pieces on their own time, outside of class.

Please congratulate the students on the great job they did!
