The goal of Conflict Mediation is to resolve disputes before they turn violent. Mediators are trained to use a communication model allowing disputants to verbally deal with issues. Mediators are trained to use listening, questioning and anger management skills. Mediators are sensitive to cultural and diversity issues. They use their skills as they elicit agreement between the disputants.�

Peer Groups are regular counseling groups designed to pursue growth in a conjoint setting. Students participate in group by being referred by a counselor or teacher, parent, peer resource student, or self-referral. Participation is voluntary. Sessions are confidential and participants agree to abide by session ground rules. Groups are not usually designed around any specific topic but are heterogeneously formed. The group setting offers students the opportunity to explore a wide range of teen issues. Groups are co-lead by Peer Group leaders and an adult Counselor or Peer Resource Ally.�

Peer Resource students may elect to become certified in Peer Group Leadership. Group leaders receive intensive communication skills training. They must exhibit and easy command of the Peer Helping Skills. They are given special training in group leadership. As part of their training, they may participate as a group member and experience the group process firsthand. After demonstration of competency, Peer Group Leaders, using a buddy system, lead a counseling group. An adult advisor or counselor is always present during these sessions.�

Academically strong students are trained by PPR and advisors to serve as tutors. Peer Tutors are trained to use a number of tutoring techniques. They are certified in basic communication and listening skills. Tutors attempt to create a positive academic experience for their tutees. Tutors may work before, during, and after school depending on the site. Tutors may also serve at feeder schools for younger aged students. Tutors may serve ESL and Proficiency deficient peers.�

Students [junior and senior level] are trained to have a thorough understanding of high school graduation, California State University, and University of California requirements. Students work out of the Student Resource Center or Career Center "checking" four-year plans for Freshman and Sophomores. This activity is in support of certificated staff's effort to maintain four-year plans on each student. The activity is under the direct supervision of the Counseling and Career Center staff.�

A community or school service activity class. Selected Peer Helpers volunteer time to community or school entity in service to others. Students are given credit based on their hours and quality of service. A school Counselor and Peer Advisor monitors students. �

The Fatherhood and Young Men's Circle is a regular support group held on three of our high school campuses [Garey, Pomona and Ganesha]. The group is designed to promote responsible behaviors and support the emotional, educational, occupational needs of young men who are young fathers. Young men who are not fathers and peer counselors are also welcome. The fatherhood group welcomes adult mentors providing young men experience and expertise.�

Offered in English and Spanish (at some schools), Girl Talk was established 5 years ago to help high school girls address teen issues that they may encounter. Girl Talk is facilitated by peer counselors and trained adults and meets monthly or bi-weekly. Topics include: relationship issues, academic issues, time management, goal-setting, post-secondary planning,  etc.
