Let the Games begin!
| Thursday, May 15th, 2008 |
The third annual Simons Olympics are now underway at Simons Middle School, following opening ceremonies on April 27 that included a torch-lighting, minus the fire. Flags of many nations were on parade as students entered the field, representing countries from around the world. Here, the teams of Jamaica, El Salvador, Cuba, and Brazil prepare to take the Athletes' Oath. PE teacher Donna Rivera created the games as a way of integrating other core subjects into PE, as students learn about the countries they represent, and to make physical activity and education more fun. "Physical education has changed a lot over the years," she explained. "It's not just rolling out the ball and playing. It's a structured class like the classroom, except that the students are active." Over six weeks, students will get to compete in 35 events. |
