Roosevelt teacher dresses up for work
| Monday, March 9th, 2009 |
It's no secret that we have some of California's very best teachers. So it's also no surprise that they're willing to go to extreme lengths at times to help our students succeed -- in this case, calf-length! Roosevelt Elementary technology resource teacher Douglas Cochran pledged to students last year that if at least 20 of the school's English language learners could become fluent in English this year, he would put on a dress for their recognition assembly. It must have been a great incentive, because 40 students recently received recognition for becoming English-fluent! And yes, Mr. Cochran kept his word. Sporting a light little flowery number, and even a wig and makeup, he surprised the school assembly, partly because he really didn't look that bad! Did anyone make fun of him? Not likely. Not only is he very popular with students, but he also happens to be an accomplished sumo wrestler in his off time. He has competed extensively in the U.S., New Zealand, and Japan, and has won several titles. This summer Mr. Cochran will compete in the World Games in Taiwan. |
