Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),
Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year at Simons Middle School, "Home of the Spartans." It truly is an honor and a privilege to have been appointed the new principal of Simons. As a former Simons' teacher, I am returning home to join a community of students, parents, teachers, and staff who believe that all students can achieve. As a collaborative team, we will work to reach each student, to improve instruction, and to support and assure student learning. The Simons' motto is "only the best…steps above the rest." We will accept nothing less for our children.
We have an exciting engaging year planned for our Spartans. The teachers have been working hard in professional learning communities to continue with integration of the common core standards and the California state standards as we prepare for the transition in 2014-2015. Students will be using AVID strategies, Cornell notes, marking the text, engaging in academic discourse, and using technology to support them in becoming critical thinkers, creative collaborators, and effective communicators.
To be a true collaborative community we will need your support. We will need you to join our committees, come to the coffee with the principal meetings, volunteer on campus, and learn about the 21st century skills to help us support your student's learning. We will be working towards implementing technology classes for parents to increase awareness of social media and how technology can be used to support your students at home.
Please encourage your students to get involved in the school by joining one of our many clubs during our club rush week. Research shows students who are connected to the school experience higher academic success.
Attendance counts! Attendance is the greatest predictor of grade point average. Please make sure that your student is in school everyday on time. We want to make every moment of their middle school years memorable.
We will continue with our school wide binder initiative. This is an organizational tool that will prepare students for high school and college. They will receive the details the first week of school.
We are looking forward to a successful year of learning!
Wishing you a positive year,
"One person can make a + difference!"
