MEChA Fundraiser (Students fundraise for a cause)

Monday Nov. 2nd and Tues. Nov. 3rd: "FASTING FOR AB 540 SCHOLARSHIPS" Eight staff now fasting, plus many students in solidarity of the cause. Over $800 raised, with a goal of $1,500 still to raise! Staff at Garey High School will be participating in a fundraiser hosted by student group MECHA to fund scholarships for AB 540 students. Staff will be fasting for a minimum of two days, and people will "sponsor" us per day that we fast, such a a "jogathon" or something similar. Donations range from $5 a day, to $150 a day so far. All funds go directly to MEChA's scholarship fund for AB 540 scholarship students. This is an important show of devotion from Garey High staff and students to say that education counts--FOR EVERYONE, whether they are born in the U.S. or elsewhere. Especially with AB 540 being threatened currently in state courts, and with the federal DREAM ACT also receiving great support right now in congress, our timing is perhaps even critical. If you would like to support the MEChA scholarship fund for AB 540 students, or join us in our fast, please contact Debbie LeAnce immediately at (909) 223-3384, or Room 111 at Garey High School. Students wishing to participate in the fast may decide to do so according to their own personal decision and desire to participate though are not being asked to, and will not be permitted to fast "for money" as part of the fundraiser because they are minors. But some are choosing still to participate from their own desire to support the cause. On Tuesday afternoon, parents and community are invited to join in the breaking of the fast in room 111 at Garey High School. Join us by bringing a dish / potluck for those undergoing fast.
