POMONA UNIFIED STUDENT TO PARTICIPATE IN STATE SCIENCE FAIR

POMONA, CA - April 10, 2013 - Pomona Unified School District's own Raul Lopez, of Fremont Academy, will be displaying his award-winning science fair project at the upcoming California Science Fair next week.

"We couldn't be prouder of Raul," Richard Martinez, superintendent of Pomona Unified School District said.  "He is a great role model for his fellow students and for all of us at PUSD."

Lopez's project, "Effects of Altitude on Drones," won second place at the Los Angeles County fair's Engineering Application category and was awarded the fair's Navy Certificate and Medal. For the project, Lopez flew remote controlled drones up to the stratosphere, testing the high-altitude effects on radio frequency, stability and other components of the machines.

While Lopez has taken his projects to the LA County Science Fair three times, this will be his first time at the state competition.

The California Science Fair will run April 15-17 at Exposition Park in Los Angeles.  Lopez says he is "very excited" to be participating.

In honor of the many students we support who are challenged by autism, on April 20th, PUSD is once again participating in Walk Now for Autism Speaks.  This event raises money for Autism Speaks, the world's leading autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. El año escolar esta pasando de prisa y nuestros estudiantes se están preparando para las vacaciones de primavera, después exámenes finales  y luego el verano!  Al acercarnos al fin del año escolar, deseo darles las gracias a ustedes, nuestros padres y a la comunidad, por todo el apoyo y la ayuda que nos han brindado. 

Empezamos el año escolar 2012-13 comprometidos en hacer que los estudiantes lo recordaran como "el mejor año que han tenido."  Hemos tenido muchos éxitos y ustedes  han sido parte de ello al dar su apoyo a nuestros estudiantes y escuelas.  Nuestras familias y la comunidad son nuestros mejores socios en educar a nuestros niños. 

No lo podemos hacer sin ustedes.

Disfruten esta semana de vacaciones al tener a sus hijos en casa. Dejen que se relajen y se diviertan, para que cuando regresen a clases tengan  energía y estén listos para hacer  lo que queda del año escolar 2012-13 el mejor año que han tenido.

February 5, 2013 Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s): The District has been made aware of the arrest of an individual who was assisting and was in the review process to become a coach at Diamond Ranch High School.  The arrest was based on an accusation of an inappropriate relationship with a minor from another school district. Upon receipt of information, the school and District administration have fully cooperated with the authorities. While there is a presumption of innocence in matters of this nature, the District takes such matters with the utmost seriousness. The individual is not on the campus and will not return to campus pending the outcome of the investigation. Per District policy, this individual was subject to a criminal background check and fingerprinted.  Both the background check and the fingerprint analysis returned no previous criminal complaints. This is a difficult time for our school and with your continued support we will maintain an educationally sound and supportive school environment for all students. Students may hear rumors or information from various sources. Parents are encouraged to discuss such information with their student(s). We remain committed to the safety and well-being of our students. School counselors and psychologists from the District will be available to meet with students as appropriate.
